Hearing Aid Device: Many Good Options To Choose From

A great deal of scientific research has been done to help the hearing impaired people lead a normal life. A hearing aid device helps transmit the sound waves from the surrounding area into the ears of the hearing impaired. First invented by Harvey Fletcher, these devices have been improved technically to deliver better performance with easy wear.

A hearing aid mainly consists of three main parts. That is, a microphone to pick up the sound, an amplifier to enhance the sound signals, and a speaker to direct the sound signals into the ear. All hearing aids are fitted with a battery to power the instrument. The hearing aids can be either worn externally, or implanted surgically.

The hearing aids worn externally are of three main types, namely, Behind the Ear or BTE, Inside The Ear or ITE, and In the Canal or ITC. The BTE hearing aids have been further modified to become less visible and lighter in weight. These are called Open Fit, and are more popular than the traditional BTE models which are more visible. The ITC types are also of two types, namely, Completely in the Canal aids or CIC and Mini Canal or MIC.

The hearing aids which can be surgically implanted are of two main types, namly, the Cochlear implant and the Bone Anchored Hearing Aid. These are more expensive options, and are generally chosen where external hearing aids are not of much help. These devices are fitted inside the skull or inside the ear, and hence entail certain risks.

The proper selection of hearing aids is very essential. Different people have varying degrees or types of deafness. For instance, some people have unilateral deafness, while others have bilateral deafness. The degree or severity of hearing impairment also varies. Besides, some merely suffer from congenital ear diseases. In some patients, the external ear might not be developed. Hearing aids are made to suit different types of hearing impairment. Then, there are special hearing aids and accessories for children.

The externally worn hearing aids also require great maintenance and care. Many accessories are needed for the proper upkeep of these devices. The wax and dirt need to be regularly cleaned for the optimum performance. Accessories have to dehumidified and protected from moisture. Certain cases are available to store, dry, and deodorize the hearing aids. The batteries also need to be regularly checked.

Siemens, Rexton, Phonak, Starkey, Beltron, and Unitron, are some of the leading manufacturers of hearing aid device. These companies manufacture either digitally programmable models, or the conventional analog systems. These companies are regularly producing technically advanced versions of their earlier models.
